What are the main raw materials used in the production of polyester resin? What performance indicators are involved?

The main raw materials for producing polyester resins include phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and styrene. Polyester resin is the abbreviated term for unsaturated polyester adhesives. Unsaturated polyester adhesives are primarily composed of unsaturated polyester resin, an initiator, a promoter, fillers, thixotropic agents, and other additives. A linear‑structured polyester resin containing –CH=CH– double bonds in its backbone can be blended with olefinic monomers such as styrene, acrylates, and vinyl acetate; under the action of initiators and promoters, it polymerizes at room temperature to form an insoluble, non‑melting product. The English abbreviation for unsaturated polyester is UP. It is mainly used in the production of coil coatings.

Saturated polyester resin

Saturated polyester resins (oil-free alkyd resins) are primarily used in the production of coil coatings. Depending on their properties and structure, they can serve as topcoats, primers, or backcoats for coil coatings, and are also employed in inks and in saturated polyester resins for thermal lamination films. Our 312C oil-free alkyd resin is a high‑molecular‑weight linear saturated polyester resin successfully developed by our plant, mainly applied in adhesives for thermal lamination films and as a primer in coil coatings, offering excellent adhesion along with a well‑balanced combination of hardness and toughness. Epoxy‑based primers are characterized by strong substrate adhesion and excellent compatibility with topcoats; moreover, they exhibit outstanding corrosion resistance and chemical resistance.

Basic Classification of Polyester Resins

By using different polybasic acids and polyols, it is possible to synthesize saturated polyester resins of various types and with distinct properties. If only linear diols and dicarboxylic acids are employed, the resulting resin contains exclusively linear chains; if the polybasic acids include aromatic rings—such as phthalic anhydride, terephthalic acid, or trimellitic anhydride—the product will feature aromatic ring structures. Furthermore, when additional components are introduced via chemical reactions beyond polyols and polybasic acids, the resulting resin is classified as a modified polyester. When synthesizing polyester resins with linear polyols and polybasic acids, the resulting polymer exhibits a linear architecture and excellent flexibility, making it suitable primarily for certain applications.

What is the difference between epoxy resin and polyester?

I. Differences in Composition 1. Epoxy Resin: A condensation product of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A or polyols. 2. Polyester: A general term for polymers obtained through the polycondensation of polyols and polyacids. It primarily refers to polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and conventionally also includes polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and aromatic polyesters, among other linear thermoplastic resins. II. Differences in Application Areas 1. Epoxy Resin: Epoxy resin is mainly used in the coatings and electronics industries. Approximately one quarter of its applications are in composite material molding, with a particular emphasis on printed circuit boards in the electronics sector. 2. Polyester: PET can be processed into fibers, films, and plastic products.

What is polyester resin?

Polyester resins are a class of high‑molecular‑weight polymers obtained through the polycondensation of diols with dicarboxylic acids, or of polyols with polycarboxylic acids. Polyester resins are classified into saturated polyester resins and unsaturated polyester resins. Unsaturated polyester adhesives consist primarily of unsaturated polyester resin, pigments and fillers, and various additives such as initiators. These adhesives exhibit low viscosity, excellent wettability, and good processability; after curing, they form films that are hard, highly transparent, and brightly glossy. They can cure rapidly at room temperature under pressure, possess good heat resistance, and offer superior electrical properties. However, their drawbacks include significant shrinkage, relatively low adhesive toughness, and poor resistance to chemical media and water, which limits their use to non‑structural applications. They are mainly employed for bonding fiberglass‑reinforced plastics and rigid plastics.

What is the difference between polyester and resin?

Resin: An organic polymer that exhibits softening or melting upon heating, showing flow under external force when softened; at room temperature, it is solid or semi-solid, though it may occasionally exist in liquid form. II. Differences in Characteristics 1. Polyester Characteristics: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is produced via the polycondensation of terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol (EG). Some of this PET is further processed by underwater pelletizing to yield the final product. Fiber-grade polyester chips are used to manufacture polyester staple fibers and polyester filaments, serving as a key raw material for polyester fiber producers.
